When Architecture Meets Innovation
XYZ Technologie Culturelle, a Montreal-based company specializing in custom audiovisual integration for museums, interpretive courses, theaters, and private institutions, approached MatterThings with a monumental challenge: create a strikingly detailed scale model of the San Fernando Cathedral in San Antonio, Texas — precise enough to serve as a projection surface for a large-scale video artwork.
With 50 employees across four offices in Montreal, Quebec, Dubai, and Merida, XYZ Technologie Culturelle is no stranger to ambitious projects. But this one required a new kind of partner.

XYZ Technologie Culturelle, une entreprise montréalaise spécialisée dans l'intégration audiovisuelle sur mesure pour les musées, les parcours interprétatifs, les théâtres et les institutions privées, a approché MatterThings avec un défi de taille : créer un modèle réduit extrêmement détaillé de la Cathédrale San Fernando à San Antonio, au Texas — suffisamment précis pour servir de surface de projection pour une œuvre vidéo à grande échelle.
Avec 50 employés répartis dans quatre bureaux à Montréal (Québec), Dubaï et Mérida, XYZ Technologie Culturelle a l'habitude des projets ambitieux. Mais celui-ci nécessitait un nouveau type de partenaire.
"The Saga" — A Mega Video Projection
Directed by renowned video artist Xavier de Richemont, the work titled "The Saga" is a spectacular large-scale video projection mapped onto the San Fernando Cathedral in San Antonio. As part of this project, XYZ specialists installed and programmed a fully automated outdoor projection and sound diffusion system — transforming the cathedral's iconic facade into a living canvas.
In order to present this work at trade shows and exhibitions around the world, the XYZ team needed a portable scale model that perfectly reproduced the architectural details of the Cathedral. That is where MatterThings stepped in.

"The Saga" — Une mégaprojection vidéo
Dirigée par le célèbre artiste vidéo Xavier de Richemont, l'œuvre intitulée « The Saga » est une spectaculaire projection vidéo à grande échelle sur la façade de la Cathédrale San Fernando à San Antonio. Dans le cadre de ce projet, les spécialistes d'XYZ ont installé et programmé un système entièrement automatisé de projection extérieure et de diffusion sonore, transformant la façade iconique de la cathédrale en une toile vivante.
Afin de présenter cette œuvre lors de salons et d'expositions à travers le monde, l'équipe d'XYZ avait besoin d'une maquette portable reproduisant fidèlement les détails architecturaux de la cathédrale. C'est là qu'est intervenu MatterThings.
The 3D Printing Process
This project was a monumental undertaking. Our in-house 3D designer had to divide the .STL file — the digital 3D model used for 3D printing — into 17 smaller sections so that each part would fit within the build volume of our 3D printers. In total, it took eight 3D printers working in concert to bring this project to life.
The numbers speak for themselves: 119 hours of total print time (with each of the 17 parts averaging approximately 7 hours), followed by 36 hours of careful assembly. The material of choice was PLA — a durable, reliable filament well-suited to this kind of detailed architectural model.

Once all the parts were printed, our team welded them together to form a stable, solid single model. We designed interlocking fins on each of the 17 sections so they would fit together seamlessly, and added internal supports along with a sturdy base so the model could stand on its own — ready to travel to exhibitions anywhere in the world.

Ce projet a représenté un travail considérable. Notre designer 3D en interne a dû diviser le fichier .STL — le modèle numérique 3D utilisé pour l'impression 3D — en 17 sections plus petites afin que chaque pièce puisse tenir dans le volume de construction de nos imprimantes 3D. Au total, il a fallu huit imprimantes 3D travaillant en concert pour donner vie à ce projet.
Les chiffres parlent d'eux-mêmes : 119 heures de temps d'impression total (chacune des 17 pièces nécessitant en moyenne environ 7 heures), suivies de 36 heures d'assemblage minutieux. Le matériau choisi était le PLA — un filament durable et fiable, parfaitement adapté à ce type de modèle architectural détaillé.
Une fois toutes les pièces imprimées, notre équipe les a assemblées par soudure pour former un modèle unique, stable et solide. Nous avons conçu des ailettes d'emboîtement sur chacune des 17 sections afin qu'elles s'assemblent parfaitement, et nous avons ajouté des supports internes ainsi qu'une base robuste pour que le modèle puisse se tenir debout — prêt à voyager vers des expositions partout dans le monde.
The Final Product
The result is a large, highly detailed scale model of the San Fernando Cathedral — a portable showcase that XYZ Technologie Culturelle's team can bring to trade shows and exhibitions to demonstrate exactly what Xavier de Richemont's "The Saga" looks like projected onto the actual cathedral facade in San Antonio, Texas.
From what we see, it looks truly amazing.
