It is fully equipped with many devices for navigation and acquisition. Civil technicians of Hydro Québec's ROV (Remotely Operated Underwater Vehicle) inspection division came to us with a unique problem. They needed to perform an urgent inspection, but a part of their ROV, shown below (right), was broken.

They designed the replacement part and brought us the .STL file of their model (shown below) and asked us to build it as a completely solid object (100% infill) for improved strength because it's a crucial part of their ROV.

It took approximately 11.5 hours and 309g. of PLA plastic to build on one of our MakerBot Replicator 2 3D printers.

PLA or Polylactic Acid is a bio-plastic derived from renewable resources - corn starch and resists many solvents such as acetone, motor oil, gasoline, paint thinner, etc.

The main purpose of the ROV is to perform underwater inspections of power houses and dams. It is fully equipped with many devices for navigation and acquisition. It is driven from a control unit at the end of a 400 m tether cable.

With traditional manufacturing methods (CNC milling), this part would have taken weeks to manufacture, been a lot more expensive, and often sent abroad to be built. Instead from design to production, this part is 100% made right here in Montréal, Québec and 3D printed within one day.
